“ Ideas happen when our minds wander.”
— SIMON SINEK
SAGE ADVICE I RECEIVED EARLY IN MY CAREER while working at The White House that I have never forgotten was“ to be careful not to do or say anything you wouldn’ t want to see printed on the front page of The Washington Post.”
It is interesting to think about this advice in today’ s 24 / 7 connected world when everyone is posting their every thought and opinions on social media. Funny— we didn’ t have internet at work then! Compared to 20 years ago, when daily thoughts were written in a journal and we would have been mortified if anyone were to read them, now everyone posts those same thoughts on social media and is offended if their followers don’ t read them— let alone comment on them! How ironic!
Personally, I think the“ old school” advice that resonates with me is still very much relevant today. I recently watched a powerful video of # ISPA2016 closing keynote speaker Simon Sinek which spoke to me and reminded me of how things continue to change and evolve. It may seem ironic that we are touting the value of unplugging while at the same time asking you to watch a 15-minute video on YouTube— but I promise, watch it and if you have seen it, watch it again. As Simon mentions, we lose our creativity when our mind is stuck on our phones. We must put them down in order to discover new ideas.“ Ideas happen when our minds wander.” Great reminders and some wise advice for today as we navigate the new normal. And more importantly— practice patience and why it is so critical that we take time to play!
