possibilities as spa industry leaders came together that first year to share insights, exchange knowledge and chart a plan for the future of the spa industry and the association.
Even in its formative years, ISPA demonstrated a bold commitment to excellence and innovation— a quality that remains one of its hallmarks today. In 1992, I joined the Board of Directors of ISPA, and the early years were marked by spirited debates, collaborative initiatives and a shared determination to establish best practices to elevate the professional standards and services of member spas. Our“ headquarters” started as space in Bernie Burt’ s desk in his office and then graduated to an association management company that we quickly outgrew. In 1995, we hired Host Communications; through Host, we hired Lynne McNees as our executive director just four years after ISPA’ s beginning. With the foresight and vision of the board of directors and working with Host Communications( now Associations International), we went from our printed member directory and two-page newsletter to a beautiful magazine full of news articles and a robust website replete with industry studies, educational materials and industry news that is constantly updated. ISPA’ s Conferences and events have evolved as career-enhancing experiences offering opportunities to meet industry leaders, share ideas, explore new
products and innovations and establish lasting relationships. ISPA has proven to be more than a Conference— its emphasis on education and knowledge, consistently updated throughout the year and through online learning, has continued to be instrumental in redefining what it means to be a spa professional.
The 35-year journey has not been without its challenges. The spa industry has faced economic recessions, a global pandemic and changing spa-goer behavior. Through it all, I have seen ISPA serve as a pillar of support that offers resources, insights and encouragement to navigate turbulent times.
Looking to the future, I am filled with optimism and excitement. Our Board of Directors and ISPA staff will ensure ISPA continues to grow and evolve. ISPA will remain a champion of fresh thinking, high standards and genuine connection. I am proud to be part of ISPA’ s legacy and eager to continue to contribute to its future. Here’ s to many more years of shared growth and inspiration! n
