with legislature to formally “ stand up ” the compact once it has been enacted by a threshold number of states .“ So , we ’ re still in phase one ,” Shafer said .“ We ’ re still in the development phase , but what we want to be intentional about is engaging with the profession to ensure that the product that we ’ re producing fits the needs of the profession so that there are no issues that we ’ re not foreseeing that we need to address on this end before it ’ s finalized .”
BENEFITS OF THE COMPACT FOR SPA OWNERS Once finalized , adoption of the IMpact by state legislatures would have a lasting positive influence not only on the spa industry , but also on the economy of the states adopting the agreement . According to Shafer ,“ The primary benefit [ of the IMpact ] is facilitating mobility for licensees . It ’ s also expanding employment opportunities — you as a business owner are now able to move your staff around the country in a seamless manner without having to jump through the hoops of the licensure system in that state . You could have salon or spa employees who operate in one state for a month and then move them across the country for another six months and then move them back . They could be fully mobile via the compact . There are [ also ] benefits for regulators here to reduce administrative burden , facilitate information exchange and setting up joint discipline of licensees across state lines .”
With his finger on the pulse of the industry , Shafer hastened to add that a profound general benefit for states adopting the compact is the heightened promotion of workforce development and increased access to highly qualified practitioners .
GETTING INVOLVED AS A STAKEHOLDER In addition to hosting review sessions via Zoom every week to review the provisions of the compact , Shafer noted additional means to contributing to the review process as a stakeholder , encouraging spa professionals to “[ provide ] your comments and feedback via an online survey that we developed . Visit our website and see the survey that we ’ ve developed where you can submit your written comments on the document . So this is the primary avenue for you , as a member of the profession to get involved in this process , if you ’ re interested . Now is the time to get your feedback in to get your thoughts in if you have specific recommendations about the compact .” n
