CONVERSATIONS WITH DAYMOND JOHN DAYMOND JOHN is an internationally-known entre- preneur, business leader and brand guru who founded iconic fashion brand FUBU. After establishing the business in 1992 in his home in Hollis, Queens, John grew FUBU into a brand that grossed hundreds of millions of dollars each year. John is also a bestselling author; his most recent book, Rise and Grind, is about the common habits and practices of creative thinkers, entrepreneurs and go-getters across multiple industries. Pulse got the oppor- tunity to speak with John about his book, his “Rise and grind” habits, and his advice for the spa industry’s many small business owners. Pulse: What traits or habits stood out the most to you about the high- achievers you talked to for Rise and Grind? Daymond John: Discipline. People who are dedicated to mapping out a schedule and focusing on what needs to get done that day. What makes sense for you doesn’t make sense for everyone else. P: What are some immediate changes our readers can make in their lives to start rising and grinding? J: Schedule out your day. Set reasonable and attainable goals that you can accomplish by the end of today, tomorrow, next week, etc. “After 10 years of Shark Tank, I have realized that we, as entrepreneurs, need to set aside time to take care of ourselves.” 28 PULSE ■ January/February 2019
