IT ’ S AN AMAZING TIME of year for ISPA members who love to dig into the data , as the recently released ISPA Consumer Snapshot will soon be followed up by the 2022 ISPA U . S . Spa Industry Industry Study , the full results of which are set to be released to all ISPA members later this month . In addition to the Big Five statistics ( see page 17 ), the report will also include wide-ranging data on trends in the industry ’ s recovery .

The study reveals that U . S . Spa Industry revenues grew more than 49 percent from 2020 , coming in just below the industry ’ s all-time high of $ 19.1 billion in 2019 . The number of spa visits grew by nearly 50 million , while the

total number of U . S . spas fell only slightly from 21,560 in 2020 to 21,510 in 2021 . A notable increase in revenue per spa visit also played a crucial role in elevating industry revenues . The number of industry employees also rose in 2021 , increasing to 345,000 from 304,800 in 2020 .

The full results report will also include extensive additional data and analysis of other trends in spa treatments , retail performance , technology use and other figures that provide context for the industry ’ s ongoing recovery

AFTER MAKING A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED in-person debut at the 2022 ISPA Conference in May with sessions on the future of the spa industry and talent strategies , the ISPA Town Hall series returned last month in its virtual form . That session highlighted the recent developments surrounding interstate compacts and their impact on the spa industry . Matt Shafer from the Council of State Governments educated ISPA members on the newly developed massage therapy licensure compact , which creates a pathway for licensed massage therapists to seamlessly practice in any compact member state . ISPA will continue to feature topic-driven Town Hall discussions throughout 2022 and host the recordings at experienceispa . com for on-demand viewing as a benefit of membership .
