A MATTER OF TIME : Making Reduced Spa Hours Work

IN A VACUUM , the occasionally overwhelming level of demand that the spa industry has been experiencing since last year is a good problem to have , especially in light of the closures , occupancy restrictions and other pandemic-related challenges that sent revenues and profits plummeting just two years ago . That said , the industry ’ s persistent staffing issues have led spa leaders to get creative as they attempt to capture as much of that demand as possible without overloading service providers and frontline staff .
Some spas have introduced guest-led services to their menus to provide guests with options that don ’ t require a service provider ’ s presence in the space , and some have relied on technologies such as sound therapy , infrared saunas or cryotherapy machines for the same reason . Another common approach has been the adoption of reduced hours of operation and a fresh approach to scheduling , which has al-
