European Summit
In 1996, ISPA leaders met with European spa
representatives in Baden-Baden, Germany, to discuss
forming a European chapter of ISPA—which would
officially launch a year later. This wasn’t the first time
ISPA went to Europe, though: in 1993, the ISPA Board
of Directors was invited, sponsored and hosted by the
Italian Tourist Board. With Italians losing their
government-provided subsidies for spa visits, Italian
spas faced an existential crisis. They turned to ISPA
for advice on how to attract spa tourists from outside
Italy and thereby save their spas.
