We have set parameters of how professionalism should look like at work and how we are expected to fit within the norms of society and even within our interactions with those we have relationships with. Boundaries, while necessary, can restrict creativity. The message about art’s ability to tap into our creative soul is echoed on the pages of this Pulse issue in “Incorporating Art: Adding Artistic Touches to Spas and Spaces” (pages 42 to 45). Art, by definition, is freedom of expression. In the most mindful of ways, when a person can create art, it not only engages a different side of the brain but also blocks out the noise inside the mind, allowing the most vital organ to let go and breathe. It’s why executive groups seek a balance outside the board room, why inventors go on sabbaticals, and why CEOs unplug. Massage, in its truest form, is an exploration of the body in 3D, connecting through creativity, intuition, and touch. As avid art collectors, my partner and I love the works of Joyce Pensato, Hunt Slonem, Patricia Powers, Frank Faulkner, Jun Kaneko, Cindy Sherman, to name a few. I am also a huge admirer of works by Tuska, who is known for how he celebrates the human body through his anatomical sculptures and paintings. In fact, in a recent recycled-art-themed installation at Hilton Head Health, I have been drawn to Chandler’s kimono sculptures, creatively made out of barrels.
