P: What would you consider to be your biggest success? What lessons have you learned from it? t: My biggest success has been the pivot I took in my business. I turned my little beauty boutique into a private beauty studio. I would never have been able to survive as a business without this pivot. I learned to always listen to your clients— it was my clients that requested skincare services and put the idea in my head to get my esthetics license. I learned that in business, you must be open to the pivot, and to outside influence. A lot of people don’ t know what they’ re talking about and will try to talk you in or out of something. Trust your gut, and know when to take the good advice, and dispose of the bad and negative.
P: How has the Murad scholarship and the get your dream Job campaign helped you make that essential pivot in your business? t: When I first applied to esthetics school, I was struggling to pay all my bills and my one employee. I was working full time in a restaurant as well as days in the shop. I had enough money saved to make my first few tuition payments, and honestly did not know how I would pay for the rest. But I believed in myself and hustled and applied for this scholarship knowing that it could be mine if I put everything I could into it. The day I got the call to say I received the scholarship, I had just left the financial aid office with my bill in my hands, a heavy heart, thinking that this journey was ending before it even began. This scholarship helped to shape the life that I have now. Without it, I would probably still be working as a waitress, trying to figure out what’ s next. Instead I am a business owner, looking to the future for expansion and growth.
P: that’ s amazing! Now that you’ ve accomplished your dream, where do you see yourself in five years? t: In 5 years I hope to have opened an additional True Beauty location in another Brooklyn neighborhood, with my mentorship program in full swing. n
