How do you make time for yourself to recharge and avoid burnout?

SOUND OFF GIVES VOICE to the many perspectives that shape our industry. Each issue, we ask ISPA members from different roles, regions and company types the same question— and discover how their responses align, differ and inspire.

“ On workdays when my schedule isn’ t as full, I walk around property, speak with other team members, walk around the outside of the building or walk outside to our rooftop pool deck and check out our garden. Off days will be spent with recovery— getting spa treatments, going for nature walks, spending time with friends or sometimes just quiet time with my pets and a book. Disconnecting, learning to step away from our everyday work stress and unplugging are key things we need to do. They help us stay focused and recharged for our roles
“ Longevity in this industry requires boundaries. You can’ t pour from an empty cup. I make a conscious effort to establish hard start and stop times whenever possible, spend time outdoors, exercise regularly and reconnect with nature. One of my favorite ways to recharge is working in my garden— it’ s difficult to scroll through emails when your hands are in the dirt. I’ ve come to realize that tending to a garden isn’ t all that different from tending relationships. Making time for my marriage, friendships, and the people I care about keeps me grounded and present.”
“ Preventing burnout isn’ t about waiting for a weeklong vacation; it’ s about weaving‘ micro-doses’ of self-care into your daily life. For me, that happens after a long day once my little one is finally asleep. I love to put on a face mask, bake a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls and settle in to catch up on a Bravo show or a good documentary. Enjoying that warm dessert right out of the oven while completely unplugging is my ultimate reset. HOT TIP: Annie’ s Organic Cinnamon Rolls are the best store-bought, ready-tobake cinnamon rolls!!”
“ Exercise is one of the best remedies for stress, anxiety and mental health, which fuels my recharge. Stay strong to live long! I make sure to balance my life by incorporating the“ 5 Dimensions of Wellness” including physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual activities. Working and living by the ocean allows me to harness this self-care daily with every sunrise.” n
