WORTH WATCHING A great TV show can turn downtime into an opportunity to unwind, laugh or see something differently. In this edition of Worth Watching, ISPA members recommend four shows worth adding to your watchlist. Stay tuned for more community favorites featured in future issues of Pulse.
LIVE TO 100: SECRETS OF THE BLUE ZONES WHERE TO WATCH: Netflix
What can communities with unusually high numbers of healthy centenarians teach us about well-being? Author Dan Buettner travels from Okinawa and Sardinia to Costa Rica, Greece and California to explore the habits associated with longer, more vibrant lives. Natural movement, social connection, purpose, food and the environments in which people live all enter the conversation. For spa leaders watching the continued rise of longevity as a wellness priority, the four-part series offers plenty of ideas— and questions— about what consumers may increasingly seek from a welllived life.
THE BEAR
WHERE TO WATCH: Hulu
A restaurant kitchen may be a long way from a treatment room, but spa and hospitality leaders may recognize plenty in The Bear: high expectations, talented employees, demanding guests and the constant challenge of delivering exceptional service under pressure. There’ s an added reason for ISPA members to tune in: ISPA favorite Will Guidara, author of Unreasonable Hospitality, serves as a co-producer, and his philosophy of making service memorable is woven into the series. His book even becomes part of one character’ s hospitality education. Come for the drama; stay for the conversations about training, culture, burnout, teamwork— and what it really takes to make people feel cared for.
THE WHITE LOTUS WHERE TO WATCH: HBO Max
Luxury resorts, extravagant guest expectations, carefully choreographed experiences— and the employees responsible for keeping paradise looking effortless. The White Lotus is satire, not a hospitality training video, but that may be precisely what makes it irresistible industry viewing. Its fictional resorts provide a heightened look at the complicated relationship between guests, employees, privilege, service and the pursuit of escape. Season 3’ s Thailand setting adds an especially strong wellness dimension, while the upcoming fourth season moves the action to luxury properties along the French Riviera.
DON’ T DIE: THE MAN WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER WHERE TO WATCH: Netflix
How far would you go to slow the aging process? This provocative documentary follows tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson as he devotes extraordinary amounts of time, money and attention to extending his life, from rigorous daily routines to experimental treatments and medical procedures. The value for spa leaders isn’ t necessarily in following his playbook. It’ s in seeing one extreme expression of the rapidly evolving longevity movement and considering the questions it raises about health optimization, technology, consumer expectations and just what it means to“ age well.”
