Like most, my diet was the standard diet of meat and starches. Exercise was a dirty word—I did none—and stress from living and working in the metro area of a large city was common for me. Fear awakened me! I adopted a healthy plant-based diet which led me to the leadership of Hippocrates, which was then in Boston and being run by its founder Ann Wigmore. In 1980, I was asked to take the helm, and in 1987 with my wife Anna Marie, moved Hippocrates to West Palm Beach, Florida where it is today. HHI is on a 55-acre calm, tropical resort setting. Each year guests from dozens of countries 32 PULSE ■ October 2018 around the world and from all 50 states come to Hippocrates in West Palm Beach. In 1956, she opened the doors of Hippocrates Health Institute and founded and pioneered lifestyle medicine. She recognized that even the top doctors did not always have the answers. She learned that the one thing that always works is taking personal responsibility for all of your thoughts, actions and lifestyle choices.
