CIRCULARITY The Ultimate Form of Recycling
COVID-19 HAS HIGHLIGHTED just how interconnected we are as people around the world . We are connected 24 / 7 in every possible way , with access to travel to remote destinations . People and products are moving at light speed , with packages now delivering on the same day and communications available in some countries at 5G speed .
With unlimited access to products , we must stop to ask ourselves : What is circularity and how are we really going to get there as a global economy ?
What is Circularity ?
Circularity is possible when all materials in a product can be reused and close the loop on waste , another term for “ Closing the Loop .” A circular economy is a process that begins with designing products and systems that support the reuse of products and biproducts while eliminating waste . Circular systems employ reuse , sharing , repair , refurbishment , remanufacturing and recycling to create a closed-loop system , minimizing the use of resource inputs and the creation of waste , pollution and carbon emissions .
Where to Start
Sourcing is the ultimate first step in the circularity process . It ’ s about finding companies that design high-quality , long-lasting products that do not need to be replaced often . Look for recycling companies in your area and learn about their capabilities and the types of products they may be able to upcycle . Perhaps your yoga mats can be
fully recycled into a floor mat for the gym . This is being successfully done in many areas . Another example is textiles being broken down to be used as sustainable wall insulation for homes and buildings .
Circularity vs . Sustainability
Circularity and sustainability are similar , but they are not the same thing . Circularity is the result of a closed loop supply chain that is restorative and regenerative by design , which helps to conserve natural resources and divert waste from landfills . This may also be referred to as a “ closed loop system .”
A simple example of this would be tin cans that you send to be recycled . They are collected , crushed and turned back into tin cans over and over again . This is a closed loop manufacturing process .
Circularity is a powerful sustainability strategy that supports a sustainable planet , but not all recycling initiatives contribute to circularity . n
