THIS MONTH ’ S FEATURED STATS :
Only 50 percent of spas reported having a formal action plan in the event it had to shut down again . While reopening took priority for many spas , many have not gotten around to formulating a plan if COVID-19 cases spike and they are forced to close .
20 percent of spas — that ’ s one in every five — had no planned reopening date as of the June Snapshot Survey . This is a number to track in any future Snapshot Surveys , especially as some areas of the United States roll back their reopening plans as COVID-19
cases surge once more .
When Confronted with COVID
It ’ s quite possible that your spa will have a staff member or guest test positive . When that happens , will you be ready ? There were 12 percent of respondents that had a confirmed case of COVID-19 since reopening . Here is some advice and details of their experience :
l “ Be sure to notify all guests present same day and test team members who interacted with guest .”
l “ Overcommunicate with your team .”
l “ In general , our spas have taken the approach that if any employee feels any ill symptom ( headache , fever , coughing , etc .), we send them home immediately and require testing . Don ’ t take any chances even if someone says they think it ’ s allergies or they want to wait to see if it gets worse .”
l “ We had a family of guests report symptoms after leaving our resort . I am pleased to report that the therapists that worked on the family did not contract the virus — all tested negative . With proper hand washing , PPE and sanitization protocols , our team has remained safe . The lesson learned was how long the process of testing took . They quarantined immediately after we were notified , we needed to wait a week to see if our therapists had symptoms and then they could be tested . Then we had to wait for the test results . It took a solid two weeks from start to finish .”
