A fresh botanical mist from a European skincare line now lives discreetly on my desk and offers a refreshing moment of calm in the middle of the workday. I’ ve created a new ritual around it: When I first wake up in the morning, I splash my face with warm water and spritz the farm fresh scent all over my face. It’ s like coffee for my skin— feels so alive, and this one small thing instantly transports me to a farm in Italy.( And the founder of the line shared this tip with me, so I stole it and made it my own …# trueconfessions. What rituals are you sharing with your customers?)
I love a good tool, too, and I’ m seeing more and more facials offered that are a real massage versus just a slathering of product. I think it’ s wise for spas to incorporate more of those techniques into their face treatments— it’ s the main thing I look for when booking a facial. I’ ve got my eye on a myofascial facial at a spa in Santa Fe that I can’ t wait to try. Until then, pass the Gua-Sha please.
Old-school books. I recently joined the Austin public library and love walking through the aisles aimlessly seeing what catches my eye. I find a general genre that I’ m interested in and just enjoy the peace and quiet a library affords and come home with some free goodies— that I have to return in a few weeks— totally helps my hoarding tendencies. I read an article recently in Conde Nast Traveler about reading retreats— as in: You grab a group of friends, each of you brings your own, unique book and you spend downtime reading on your own. You could be in the same room, or lounging by your pool or on the beach— it’ s a trend! I can see how this is popular. How could you encourage more reading time in your own spa? There’ s too much noise in the world— we’ re all craving a little peace, quiet and escape. n
