A NEW WAY TO CONNECT
From there, the board moves into the agenda. Topics vary throughout the year, but the approach remains consistent: Each item is discussed thoroughly, and every director is encouraged to contribute feedback and perspective. The board’ s respectful technology policy— no texting, calls or email during discussion— helps keep attention focused and conversation meaningful. Regular breaks throughout the day allow directors to recharge and touch base with home or the office. of touchpoints— meeting in person at the ISPA Conference and continuing association business via monthly Zoom connects, committee engagement, email communication and regular collaboration through the association’ s project management platform. n
Closing with reflection— and a hint of fun When the schedule and setting allow, the board integrates a short team-building exercise— ranging from sound-bowl sessions to drum dancing— to encourage connection and focus.
The board meeting runs to 5 p. m. local time. After the final agenda items are addressed, the board participates in a short closing exercise. These reflective moments might involve summing up the meeting in a single word, identifying key action items for the months ahead or choosing a lighthearted prompt to end on a positive note.
The day concludes with a communal dinner— an opportunity to shift from business to fellowship, celebrating shared purpose and the relationships that strengthen ISPA’ s leadership.
ONE MEETING EACH YEAR IS EXTENDED to a day and a half to allow the board to focus on strategic visioning, typically in the fall. Including this annual extended session, the board holds three onsite meetings that follow a familiar and thoughtfully structured agenda. Between these gatherings, directors stay connected through a steady cadence
