Bernie ’ s journey into the world of spas began after health challenges led him to Canyon Ranch in Arizona . This transformative experience inspired his 1986 book Fodor ’ s Healthy Escapes , marking the beginning of a prolific career as a spa historian and journalist . Later co-author of 100 Best Spas of the World , he would see his byline grace the pages of many prestigious publications ,

including National Geographic Traveler , American Health and Spa Management Journal , and as “ Spa Examiner ” for Examiner . com .

In 1991 , Bernie became a founding ISPA Board member and assumed the role of the Association ’ s first executive director , playing a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of the spa industry . He was the visionary force behind the inception of Pulse magazine , where he served as the first editor , crafting a publication that became a beacon for spa

Beyond his professional contributions , Bernie lived the spa lifestyle authentically . Ten years ago at the age of 85 , he attributed his well-being to understanding his body and mental stress to achieve a sense of balance .
