DO YOU EVER WONDER how your peers would handle a situation ? Maybe you ’ re curious what other leaders in the spa industry have to say on a certain subject . In Sound Off , we ask ISPA members from differing backgrounds , countries and companies the same question and see how their answers compare .

“ Does your spa have staff trained in first aid and / or CPR ?”
SHANE BIRD Turning Stone Enterprises Director of Spa and EVS Operations
We have training that takes place annually , or as needed , for CPR . It is coordinated through our in-house security , which calls in local trainers to conduct the class on-site at the resort . About six to seven years ago , we had an older guest in our fitness area who collapsed . He had no heartbeat and was not breathing . Our staff member stepped in and performed CPR . She was credited for saving his life .
SHEILA BRACEWELL Woodcliff Hotel & Spa Director of Spa & Wellness
I am certified , as are a handful of our therapists . We are also doing an upcoming training for all managers to be certified , including some critical supervisors ( like spa and recreation ). Unfortunately , I have experienced a guest having a stroke , and knowing the signs and being able to act quickly saved our guest from a worse outcome !
JANISA CASILLAS Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa Spa Director
We hold annual on-site training for management , and therapists receive training as part of their CEUs . In my three years here , there has thankfully been no need for CPR , but we have had a slip and fall . There was no blood , but an ambulance was called by activating our Resort Emergency Response Plan .
