LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
IMpact Gains Ground The Interstate Massage Compact is moving closer to reality— and could reshape how spas recruit and retain massage talent.
ONE OF THE SPA INDUSTRY’ S most persistent workforce challenges is licensure mobility. When massage therapists move, travel or want to work across state lines, they often face the costly and time-consuming process of obtaining a new license in each state.
The Interstate Massage Compact( IMpact) is designed to change that. Much like a driver’ s license allows someone to legally drive outside their home state, the compact would allow qualified massage therapists to obtain a multistate license and practice in participating compact states without securing separate licenses each time.
Why it matters to spas For spa owners and directors, that kind of flexibility could be a game changer. A multistate license would make it easier to recruit qualified therapists, support traveling professionals and respond more effectively to seasonal demand and staffing shortages. In a tight labor market, smoother licensure portability could offer meaningful operational relief.
Momentum is building. IMpact has already been enacted in Arkansas, Montana, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia. Additional legislation is moving through the process in Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, New York and North Carolina.
Once seven states join the compact, a Compact Commission can be formed to finalize operating rules and activate the multistate license. That means the profession is now approaching an important milestone.
WHERE THINGS STAND
Why member voices matter Throughout the legislative process, policymakers often ask one key question: Does the profession support this? The voices of massage therapists, spa owners, educators and wellness professionals help answer that question— and can influence whether legislation moves forward.
How members can help l Complete the IMpact survey. l Send a letter of support to your legislators. l Share how multistate licensure could benefit your business, employees or career.
