Momentum Builds for Cosmetology, Esthetics Compacts
INTERSTATE LICENSURE MOBILITY CONTINUES to gain traction across the beauty and spa professions. The Cosmetology Interstate Compact has now been enacted in 10 states— Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington— marking a major milestone for licensed professionals, employers and the businesses that support them.
Momentum is also building for the Esthetics Interstate Compact. Legislation has been enacted in Alabama, Virginia and Kansas. There continues to be active work this session in California, Ohio, Delaware, New Jersey and North Carolina. In addition, work has already begun for 2027 bills in Arizona, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
For spas, salons, schools and brands, this is an important story to watch. Interstate compacts can help reduce workforce barriers and expand career mobility while giving employers more flexibility in meeting staffing needs. Because this issue is evolving quickly, members can expect additional updates in upcoming Pulse issues as legislation and implementation continue to develop. n
