Young advises against comparing an employee’s performance over another. “When you begin comparing employees, you open the entire process to opinion and perspective, and both are difficult to judge in an objective manner. What you think of one employee has little to no bearing on the performance of another when compared to the standards you have in place. Know your standards, and review your staff according to what you have in writing, not how you may feel about any individual’s performance,” he says. In the end, Young says both managers and employees need to understand that a performance review is a collaborative process. “The performance review is a chance to relive some of the past year’s challenges and victories together, and discuss what you each want for the coming year.
